September 10, 2013 – Inbound – #trainspotting#Chicago

Good morning. On the 7:30 AM into the City.

When in engaging in amateur-Sociology as the observer (the ethnographist, I suppose), it is natural for the orderly mind to observe and identify seemingly related but wholly random patterns. For example, as I was walking from my mini-van to the station platfor., I couldn’t help but notice that two different women, about my age, with similar body types, were wearing similar dresses with the same pattern but different color. Both women just came from morning yoga or Zumba or whatever. Both were blonde. They were not related after that. Same dress, different color.

On the train this morning, I was lucky enough to get on board before being crushed by the scrum behind me, allowing me to watch the go-getters race to the front car and find a seat. There was none late-fifties something African American woman, very much different from the woman who smelled like cocoa butter from yesterday, but with the same pattern dress and same hair style & hair color. Totally different woman. Hmph.

The train car dates back to the mid-70’s with high-backed benches, making my observations harder to conduct. Chris Rock, the acclaimed comedian, is here and is seated across the aisle. At about six-foot-tall, CR is wearing a pink Oxford shirt, grey slacks and black Florsheims. Although not aurally tethered to his iCrackerBot, he is consistently checking his social media pages for up to date content.

There is an attractive, bookish, late 20’ish woman who sat down next to me reading a book called “What Should I Do With My Life?” The cover says its a New York Times Bestseller. The pendent on her necklace says “Let Your Heart Desire” but no photo in frame. She is reading and diligently taking notes in her book. Periodically she looks up from the text and glances outside. She reminds me a bit of a more diminutive Claire Danes. She’s polite. No wedding ring, but a Neiman-Marcus-purchased bauble of a ring on her left middle finger.

Her blouse is a maroon paisley pattern – very psychedelic if it were a brighter color. Her bag is also maroon and has plastic gems of bright color. No brand name. Is this book for a class? I’m in the quiet car, and I don’t make it a habit of directly engaging in conversation with the subjects. She uses the receipt as a book mark. Is she looking for answers? Weren’t we all at that age?

Also here are Ryan Reynolds, Judy Baar Topinka, Dylan McDermott, and Anil Kapoor. They are armed to the teeth.

Happy Tuesday. Safe travels.
